Nestled just outside Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the town of Black Mountain is far more than the backdrop for our school – it’s an essential part of every student and every family’s journey.

For the past decade, our students have built meaningful connections here: working out at our local YMCA; exploring our parks and trails, becoming regulars at the public library; enjoying coffee, ice cream, and an amazing meal locally owned restaurants downtown; volunteering with organizations that strengthen our community; and gaining real-world experience through experiential learning, internships, and part-time jobs.

These everyday experiences offer something no classroom alone can provide. They foster independence, build confidence, and create a genuine sense of belonging. It’s one thing to teach social and life skills; it’s another to watch students practice them while ordering a pastry at a neighborhood coffee shop, greeting familiar faces downtown, or serving hot meals at the Open Table each Wednesday.

After ten years, we’ve learned that the most meaningful growth happens when learning extends beyond campus and into the community. Black Mountain isn’t simply where our school is located – it’s where students discover their capabilities, build lasting relationships, and develop the confidence to navigate the world well into their future.
